All Hail the Harperbot!

So the Tories got a majority government in Canada. I'm too disappointed for a proper post. Please enjoy the rest of the SBG until tomorrow.

Here in the UK we're having a vote on Thursday about whether to switch from our current First Past The Post system to the Alternative Vote system. The tories are desperate to keep the FPTP system as it benefits them massively. Hence the ads running for the "NoToAV" vote show a baby on life support with the phrase "she needs a new cardiac support system, not an alternative vote."

Classy. More worringly, it's probably working.

Same here. The Tories have a clear majority with only 39% of the vote. The system is broken, but we've elected the one party who would never dream of fixing it.

The problem the UK has it that it's overall a (slightly) left leaning country, but becuase the left vote has tended to be split between two parties, the right-wing group (the Tories) get in far more often than they are supossed to.

Plus they hate the BBC. The right-wing papers are running constant reports about how the rating for Dr Who are down and were also down last year, but it requires them to willfully misinterpret the figures. It's just part of the "story" of how the BBC an evil liberal machine that wastes YOUR money.

On the plus side, we've got a new Official Opposition who might get something done. And hopefully build on this momentum to form the next government.

Liam: Then my Cyberman joke is more appropriate than I thought.

Michael: Hopefully! Although the Opposition can't do TOO much against a majority government, I hope it'll set up the NDP as a viable federal party for next time. Half Layton's challenge was selling that very idea to traditionally polarized red/blue voters (and indeed, their huge gains come from traditionally alt-voting Quebec).
